Feather Hair Extensions

Feather Hair Extensions

Feather Hair ExtensionsOne of the hottest trends in alternative and emo hair right now is feather hair extensions! Whilst feathers have been used for years to accessorise clips and hair pieces they’ve now made a comeback in a completely different way.

Hair Extensions Basics
As a general rule, hair extensions are the answer to not damaging your hair from bleach and coloring. They also enable you to change your look instantly, and in the case of feather hair extensions, in a totally unique way! Feather hair extensions aren’t just limited to the plain colors of feathers either. They can be found in a number of different colors and styles that will surely complement your emo/scene hair style and personality.

Black and White Feather Hair Extensions

Black and white feather hair extensions are exactly that; black and white. Tip: For a really striking look, blend the hair extensions with a bright color such as pink, blue or a color of your choice! Black and white feather hair extensions look great as an addition to either plain black or blonde hair as well.

Colored Feather Hair Extensions

Red and yellow and pink and green!
Purple and orange and blue!
You can wear a rainbow..
Wear a rainbow too. ;)

Colored feather hair extensions add an instant ‘wow’ factor to your existing hairystyle and come in more colors than you probably realise. Here are just a few of my favorites:

Where To Buy Feather Hair Extensions

The best place to buy feather hair extensions is, of course, on the internet – namely, eBay and Amazon. If you know of any local stores where you can buy feather hair extensions and they stock a decent range, or any range of feather hair extensions at all for that matter, please share with us!

Scene Hair Extensions

Emo/Scene Hair Extensions
When contemplating an emo or scene hairstyle it is a good idea to do some research into hair extensions. Emo/scene hair extensions are the answer to not damaging your hair from bleach and coloring and in most cases it’s as simple as using clip-in hair extensions that can be found in a number of emo and scene styles.

Scene HairstyleScene Hairstyles
Before thinking about hair extensions to add length or color, you need a general scene haircut. A scene hairstyle could be described as a haircut that retains length but includes short choppy layers from the top down, as pictured on the right. The layers are then either combed back or teased (or a combination of both) and hairspray is used to make them spiky. Hair extensions can then be added to create length, volume or to add bright and funky colors/patterns.

Scene Hair Extension Types
There are a number of different types of hair extensions (clip-in, glue-in, micro loop and so on.) however we’re going to focus on the different types of scene hair extensions instead, for example – the colors and styles that generally represent emo or scene hair.

Scene HairstyleColored Hair Extensions
Adding an assortment of colored hair extensions is an easy way to stylize your hair and make it more ‘scene’. The color you choose ultimately depends on your preferences however it is a good idea to choose a color that works well in contrast to the rest of your hair. Also, don’t limit yourself to just one color. Try a combination of two colors if you’re feeling up to it! Tip: Black or platinum blonde hair works well with all colored hair extensions!

Racoon Stripe/Coontail Hair Extensions
Racoon stripe or ‘coontail’ hair extensions are very popular and can make a great addition to your hair. They are hair extensions that are striped horizontally or in a ‘V’ shape and come in a range of colors. Tip: For a striking look it is advised to make use of plain colors and then in addition partially blend in coontail hair extensions with a color that already exists in your hair.

Leopard Print, UV and Miscellaneous Hair Extensions
Scene hair extensions also come in a range of other styles including leopard print, stars, hearts, geometric shapes, various fringe pieces and even hair extensions that glow in UV light. Whilst not all of these scene hair extensions are readily available to buy, it is relatively easy to make them yourself by purchasing platinum blonde humain hair extensions and permanent dye. The rest is up to your creativity!

Where to Buy Cheap Scene Hair Extensions
The best place to buy cheap scene hair extensions that we could find was on the internet (Isn’t it a wonderful place? :P ).  Our two picks with the biggest range are Hot Topic and Amazon. Expect to pay anywhere between $6 to $25 and a few dollars for shipping if you live in the US and, internationally, there is a flat rate of $35 for shipping. If you’re outside the US however, Amazon.co.uk has a decent selection of scene hair extensions as well.

Emo Hair Clips and Accessories

Cute Emo Girl With a Bows in Her HairHair clips, whilst originally designed for functionality to keep hair in place, have since taken on a new edge; decoration. Particularly with emo girls, hair clips offer practicality – yes, they keep your emo fringe in check – and they also allow you to show off your individual style. Emo hair clips come in many shapes, sizes and colors though the most popular form of emo hair accessories are pretty emo bows and cute heart or star hair clips.

Considering emo hairstyles are mostly about layers, emo hair clips, bows and accessories come in handy to keep your hair under control. Emo girls tend to have longer fringes and hair clips and bows are commonly used to keep an emo girls fringe to the side, whilst also adding a splash of color and finishing off the hairstyle in a unique way. Emo boys are welcome to make use of hair clips and bows aswell.

Emo Bows
Emo bows come in many different colors and styles. They’re even easy enough to make yourself so I’d suggest visiting a craft/materials store and having a look at the ribbon they have in stock. All you need is ribbon, glue and hair clips/pins. The rest is up to your imagination.
Emo Bows

Emo Hair Clips
Unlike bows, emo hair clips can be as extreme or as simple as desired in that they are not limited to looking like ‘bows’. Bright colors, cute characters, hearts and stars are very popular when it comes to emo hair clips. Like bows, they also keep your emo fringe in check whilst adding to your overall style. Emo hair clips are inexpensive and can be worn over and over again, accentuating your clothes at the same time as looking adorable!

Emo Hair – Sonny Moore

The many styles of Sonny Moore, ex ‘From First To Last’ front man and solo artist.

Short, spiky, lots of layers. The amount of texture seen in the pic is achieved with products such as wax and texturiser, and a lot of hairspray for that kind of height.

There are a number of methods for spiking out the back of styles like this, such as blow drying/straightening the hair straight up and out from the head and then holding the spikes in place with wax and hairspray.

Another method I read about is while the hair is still wet, squeeze the excess moisture out of the back/top with your fingers while pulling the hair out and up so that it will partially dry that way. And then use the styling products.

The smooth/sleek front and sides, razored for texture, are achieved by blow drying/straightening and then smoothing with a soft flat brush, followed by an anti frizz product for shine or a small amount of wax to hold the hair roughly in place.

A very similar style to the one pictured above, however Sonny has added a lot more color to the choppy layers of his hair.

When adding in big blocks of color like this, remember to take very good care of your hair, because bleaching and coloring can really do some damage. Use hot oil treatments every two or three weeks to restore lost moisture. Use moisture replenishing shampoo and conditioner, and color protection products if you want to keep the colors very vibrant.

If you’re worried about damaging your hair, or don’t think you could maintain it, consider using colored extensions instead!

Again a very similar style to those pictured above. Sonny’s hair is a little bit longer in this pic, but as you can see, the choppy layers are still present but he is back to solid color once again.

Longer styles like this suit rounder faces, whereas the harsher short asymmetrical styles suit thinner, more angular faces. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but that is generally how it works.

For the messy look pictured, blow dry and straighten hair as normal, then put some wax on your fingers and run them through your hair, focusing on defining individual sections and particularly the ends, for those nice spiky bits.

The longer Sonny’s hair gets, the better he looks. This is because his face is quite round, and as I said above, longer styles suit his face type.

Sonny’s hair is also in much better condition in this picture, as you can see it is very shiny and healthy looking. I can’t stress enough the need to take very good care of your hair. Emo cuts, colors and styles are all about expression, so you want to be making a statement with your hair.

Make it a good one.

His hair is longer yet again in this picture. In fact this is one of his more recent styles, post FFTL when he broke out of the emo stereotype a little bit.

The other thing I wanted to point out with this picture is what not to do. See how the copper color is growing out? And *gasp* fading? You don’t want that.

I’m not going to lie, it really is a bitch to maintain this kind of coloring.

My advice, if you get sick of your hair being multi colors or just can’t keep up with it anymore, would be to dye it all the one color. A dark color like brown or black that is very easy to maintain.

Which brings me to the most recent of Sonny’s styles. The plain black, long, loose waves and very few layers. His hair is still in very good condition.

For longer styles like this, you need to make sure to pay particular attention to the ends. The longer your hair grows, the less moisture will make it to the ends. So apply hot oil and conditioning treatments, focusing on the problem areas.

And make sure to visit the hairdresser every four to six weeks for a trim to get rid of any split ends. How often you will have to go depends on how fast your hair grows.

And there you have it boys and girls, Sonny Moore hair!

How To Make Your Hair Emo

Emo hair styles vary from person to person and generally speaking, emo hairstyles make full use of bangs by shaping the hair into a side fringe that covers one eye. The side fringe is the most obvious aspect of an emo hair style but that’s only where it begins!

What makes up an emo hairstyle?

  • Brightly contrasting or colored highlights interspersed with dark shades such as black or deep brunette. For example, black hair with white blonde – or dark brown hair with blue streaks. Not all emo hair styles require black hair though! White blonde hair with colored streaks/highlights is great too.
  • Emo hair styles are usually supposed to be worn down. Ponytails or plaits aren’t that common when it comes to emo hairstyles. Hair is kept untied making good use of cute hair clips such as bows or heart/star shapes.
  • Long bangs should be swept across the face, obscuring one eye. As to which eye – it’s your choice!
  • Emo styled hair is deliberately messy – often requiring heavy use of hair styling products to create the desired look. A not so carefully crafted unruly style definitely reflects the wearers emotions – hence, an emo style!
  • An emo hairstyle is usually straight and asymmetrical. It’s common to wear one side shorter than the other and layers are very popular!

There is so much that a person can do with their hair to express their style. Having an emo hairstyle makes you stand out as an individual and it’s common to find that you get a boost of confidence by spending just that little bit extra on your hair.

So how do you make your hair emo?

  1. Grow your hair out if it’s too short. Whilst a lot of emo hairstyles don’t require that you have long hair to begin, having longer hair makes it a lot easier to shape a side fringe that covers one of your eyes. Your fringe should be longer than your nose – but no longer than your jawline.
  2. Layer your hair by cutting jagged sections throughout your hair. An emo hairstyle isn’t about symmetry – so have some fun! Remember not to cut too much off initially. You can always cut your hair shorter but there’s no way to get your hair back once it’s cut! Well, apart from the obvious..
  3. Razor your hair occasionally to maintain the spiky layered look.
  4. Dye your hair black, brown, or blonde and add some color. If you’d rather not damage your hair with bleach, consider colored extensions!
  5. Straighten your hair with a hair straightener. Remember to invest in heat defence sprays/shampoo so you don’t damage your hair.
  6. Accessorize your hair. Girly bows are particularly popular. Add them randomly to your hair. Also consider hair clips that are shaped like hearts, stars or bats! Try not to go overboard. One or two accessories is perfect.
  7. Take care of your new hair! It’s a big part of you and damage can take months to repair!
