Emo… Anime?

Emo Anime. Emo and Anime. You might think that these are two mutually exclusive terms. But let’s break them down, and you will see that the two can go hand in hand.

  • Emo is short for ‘emotional’.
  • Emo is tied to both music and fashion and represented through an individuals style.
  • Emo boys and emo girls tend to wear tight jeans, short sleeved band tee’s and have long fringes (bangs) that are swept to one side, usually covering one eye and more often than not, black – with sections of color.
  • Emo music is emotionally charged, angry and melodic, confronting listeners with confession-like lyrics that can be related to on a personal level.
  • Stereotypically, and usually stated by people who don’t understand the term ‘emo’, emo boys and girls cut themselves, are depressed and spend most of their time alone in the dark crying. Whilst this might be true in some cases, being emo is primarily about expressing yourself.
  • Emo style is very androgenous and it is rather common to find pictures online of emo boys kissing (so HOT!) and emo girls kissing. You’ll also find pictures of both emo boys and emo girls kissing. There really aren’t many limitations. To be emo is to embrace emotion.

And Anime:

  • Anime is commonly referred to as an art form.
  • Anime can be hand-drawn or computer animated.
  • It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction.
  • As a visual medium, it naturally places a large emphasis on visual styles. While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general.
  • Generally, the most common form of anime drawings are “exaggerated physical features such as large eyes, big hair and elongated limbs… and dramatically shaped speech bubbles, speed lines and exclamatory typography.”

So you see, Emo can in fact be a style of Anime. The Emo style generally would incorporate tight black clothing, soulful facial expressions, darker color schemes and meaningful plots (for animated series’). There is quite a bit of crossover into the ‘Goth’ and ‘LoliGoth’ subcultures, as far as style goes.

Emo Anime Series’

Death Note:

Death Note is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the titular “Death Note”, dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim’s name in the notebook with a picture of the victim in his mind, since there is the possibility of several people having the same name. The story follows Light’s attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him and his opponents. The manga series was transformed into anime in 2006.

Bleach:

Bleach is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he accidentally obtains the power of a shinigami—a Japanese death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from Rukia Kuchiki. Gaining these abilities forces him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. The manga has been adapted into an animated television series produced by Studio Pierrot which is still ongoing in Japan as it adapts the story from the manga. The series has also spawned two original video animations (OVAs), three animated feature films, seven rock musicals, and numerous video games, as well as prompted the release of many types of Bleach-related merchandise.
