Emo… Anime?

Emo Anime. Emo and Anime. You might think that these are two mutually exclusive terms. But let’s break them down, and you will see that the two can go hand in hand.

  • Emo is short for ‘emotional’.
  • Emo is tied to both music and fashion and represented through an individuals style.
  • Emo boys and emo girls tend to wear tight jeans, short sleeved band tee’s and have long fringes (bangs) that are swept to one side, usually covering one eye and more often than not, black – with sections of color.
  • Emo music is emotionally charged, angry and melodic, confronting listeners with confession-like lyrics that can be related to on a personal level.
  • Stereotypically, and usually stated by people who don’t understand the term ‘emo’, emo boys and girls cut themselves, are depressed and spend most of their time alone in the dark crying. Whilst this might be true in some cases, being emo is primarily about expressing yourself.
  • Emo style is very androgenous and it is rather common to find pictures online of emo boys kissing (so HOT!) and emo girls kissing. You’ll also find pictures of both emo boys and emo girls kissing. There really aren’t many limitations. To be emo is to embrace emotion.

And Anime:

  • Anime is commonly referred to as an art form.
  • Anime can be hand-drawn or computer animated.
  • It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction.
  • As a visual medium, it naturally places a large emphasis on visual styles. While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general.
  • Generally, the most common form of anime drawings are “exaggerated physical features such as large eyes, big hair and elongated limbs… and dramatically shaped speech bubbles, speed lines and exclamatory typography.”

So you see, Emo can in fact be a style of Anime. The Emo style generally would incorporate tight black clothing, soulful facial expressions, darker color schemes and meaningful plots (for animated series’). There is quite a bit of crossover into the ‘Goth’ and ‘LoliGoth’ subcultures, as far as style goes.

Emo Anime Series’

Death Note:

Death Note is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. The series centers on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the titular “Death Note”, dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim’s name in the notebook with a picture of the victim in his mind, since there is the possibility of several people having the same name. The story follows Light’s attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him and his opponents. The manga series was transformed into anime in 2006.

Bleach:

Bleach is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he accidentally obtains the power of a shinigami—a Japanese death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from Rukia Kuchiki. Gaining these abilities forces him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. The manga has been adapted into an animated television series produced by Studio Pierrot which is still ongoing in Japan as it adapts the story from the manga. The series has also spawned two original video animations (OVAs), three animated feature films, seven rock musicals, and numerous video games, as well as prompted the release of many types of Bleach-related merchandise.

These Emo Anime artworks are from various sources found online. If you are the artist of anything posted above and do not wish your work to be published, please let us know.

Also, the two Anime series listed above were voted top ‘Emo Anime Series’ in a public poll, however there are undoubtedly millions of others out there that fall into the ‘Emo’ category. Please let us know if you find some.

In her own words:

My life is simple yet confusing
But at the same time amazing

I’m a complicated girl
I’m nothing that you would ever expect

Earning my respect and trust is a hard thing to accomplish

As a matter of fact, i don’t trust anyone at all

I’m not under any of your labels – i’m much higher than them

I don’t care enough about other people to have a main bitch

I might be as perfect, or as fucked up as they come

Emo Girl – Chelsea Lynn

In her own words:

THIS IS HOW I SEE IT:

IM DONE WITH EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. FRIENDSHIP HAS COMPLETELY LOST ITS MEANING. I BELIEVE THERE ARE ONLY TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD; ACQUAINTANCES AND ENEMIES. I DONT BELIEVE IN FRIENDSHIP ANYMORE. EVERYONE IS FAKE. THESE LITTLE GAMES DONT INTEREST ME ANYMORE. I PROMISE YOU THAT I WILL NOT STAY AROUND LONG ENOUGH FOR YOU TO GET TO KNOW ME. I’M NOT GOING TO BE NICE ANYMORE.

IF YOU WANT TO BE PART OF MY LIFE THEN PROVE TO ME THAT YOUR WORTH MY TIME. I AM HATED BY MOST PEOPLE AND LOVED BY FEW. HATING ME IS THE NEW THING, THE NEW OBSESSION. DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO, SAY WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER. QUIT BEING IMMATURE, GROW UP AND GET OVER IT. YOUR NOT WORTH MY TIME, SAVE THE DRAMA FOR THE REAL WORLD KIDS. WHATEVER GOES AROUND COMES AROUND TEN TIMES WORSE. IT MAY TAKE A DAY, A MONTH, OR MAYBE EVEN A YEAR BUT IT WILL HAPPEN. I NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL REGRET ANYTHING I DO. IT HAPPENS FOR A REASON. YOU LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES. LIVE FAST, DIE YOUNG.

I LIKE TO OBSERVE HOW EVERYONE TREATS EACH OTHER. FUCKING SHIT TALKERS. HE TALKS SHIT, SHE TALKES SHIT, THEY TALK SHIT, WE ALL TALK SHIT. WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF IT? I THINK ITS FUNNY HOW EVERYONE HATES ME THEN THEY GET THEIR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME WHEN THEY DONT EVEN KNOW ME. ITS PATHETIC. DEAL WITH YOUR OWN PROBLEMS.

NOW TELL ME, WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF REALITY? LIVE YOUR LIFE AS YOU WISH BUT REMEMBER THAT EVERYTHING YOU DO AFFECTS YOUR FUTURE. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 5 YEARS? DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THINK FAST. TAKE CONTROL OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU WANT TO BECOME. SOCIETY NOW OF DAYS IS FUCKED UP. IM ASHAMED TO EVEN BE APART OF IT. BE THANKFUL FOR THE THINGS YOU HAVE AND THE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT YOU. THIS IS YOUR LIFE, NO ONE SAID IT WAS GOING TO BE EASY.

MY BOOK IS STILL BEING WRITTEN, NO ONE WILL EVER GET ME. I’M COMPLICATED SO DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. I DONT LIKE YOU. I DOUBT I EVER WILL. I’VE BEEN HURT WAY TOO MUCH BY THE PEOPLE I THOUGHT I LOVED. I CANT AND WONT TRUST ANYONE ANYMORE. SHOW ME RESPECT, SHOW ME YOUR DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE. I’LL GIVE YOU ONE CHANCE AND ONE CHANCE ONLY.

I MAY BE SMALL BUT I HAVE A LOT TO SAY SO DONT TRY TO STOP ME.

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
CAN YOU KEEP UP?
<333.

Featured Member – Samantha Louise

(Self summary taken from MySpace.com/rainbowmuchxo)

I am a diminutive, and moonstruck fifteen year old Aries girl.

I am a tender-hearted, gentle person who is spiritual.

I am intensely open-minded and accepting. Though I also strongly believe in many things, and am satisfied to convey them to idiots, whether they appreciate it or are too ignorant to.

I am infatuated with discovering bewitching moments in life.

In my spare time I find pleasure in being quixotic.

I am naturally a romantic.

I like art, music and literature.

I have been told that I have a talent for language and writing.

I recently took up the discipline of taekwondo.

I love my beautiful boyfriend of a year and a little bit Eddie, my baby/kitten Evie who is the sweetest darling, my gorgeous best friend Casey who backs me the fuck up in anything, and my offbeat family more than anything.

I’m carrying a lot of hurt around atm.
So don’t be offended if I’m just a little bit too shy, or a little bit too needy.
I’m honestly a happy, fun loving girl.
I am just finding it hard to smile right now.

Emo Girl – Hannah Bond

Hannah Bond was a 13 year old girl from East Peckham, Kent, UK. Her controversial suicide in September ‘07 has caused a number of problems for the emo culture, as the circumstances surrounding her death contain a number of negative connotations on the scene. However, all evidence to support this is completely circumstantial. On the night Hannah died she argued with her mum after she was barred from staying at a friend’s. She told her: “I feel like killing myself”. An hour later her parents found her hanging by a tie from her bunk bed at their home.

Emo music was blamed for the suicide by both the coroner at the inquest into her death and her mother, Heather Bond, after it was claimed that emo music glamorized suicide and her apparent obsession with My Chemical Romance was said to be linked to her decision to end her life. The inquest heard that she was part of an Internet “emo” cult and her Bebo page contained an image of an ‘emo girl’ with bloody wrists. It also heard that she had discussed the “glamour” of hanging online and had explained to her parents that her self harming was an “emo initiation ceremony”.

While most fans of the emo movement simply enjoy the music and dress, others take their fascination to a sinister level. They indulge in self-harming and become obsessed with death and suicide. And it is these people who ruin it for the rest of us. Hannah Bond was clearly a disturbed young girl and while her death is a tragedy it cannot be attributed to any specific band or style of expression.

My Chemical Romance’s response to claims that they inspired Hannah’s death :

“We have recently learned of the suicide and tragic loss of Hannah Bond. We’d like to send our condolences to her family during this time of mourning. Our hearts and thoughts are with them.

My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans.

The message and theme of our album ‘The Black Parade’ is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times. The last song on our album states: ‘I am not afraid to keep on living’ – a sentiment that embodies the band’s position on hardships we all face as human beings.

If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively.”

RIP Hannah Bond
