Emo Hair – Sonny Moore

The many styles of Sonny Moore, ex ‘From First To Last’ front man and solo artist.

Short, spiky, lots of layers. The amount of texture seen in the pic is achieved with products such as wax and texturiser, and a lot of hairspray for that kind of height.

There are a number of methods for spiking out the back of styles like this, such as blow drying/straightening the hair straight up and out from the head and then holding the spikes in place with wax and hairspray.

Another method I read about is while the hair is still wet, squeeze the excess moisture out of the back/top with your fingers while pulling the hair out and up so that it will partially dry that way. And then use the styling products.

The smooth/sleek front and sides, razored for texture, are achieved by blow drying/straightening and then smoothing with a soft flat brush, followed by an anti frizz product for shine or a small amount of wax to hold the hair roughly in place.

A very similar style to the one pictured above, however Sonny has added a lot more color to the choppy layers of his hair.

When adding in big blocks of color like this, remember to take very good care of your hair, because bleaching and coloring can really do some damage. Use hot oil treatments every two or three weeks to restore lost moisture. Use moisture replenishing shampoo and conditioner, and color protection products if you want to keep the colors very vibrant.

If you’re worried about damaging your hair, or don’t think you could maintain it, consider using colored extensions instead!

Again a very similar style to those pictured above. Sonny’s hair is a little bit longer in this pic, but as you can see, the choppy layers are still present but he is back to solid color once again.

Longer styles like this suit rounder faces, whereas the harsher short asymmetrical styles suit thinner, more angular faces. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but that is generally how it works.

For the messy look pictured, blow dry and straighten hair as normal, then put some wax on your fingers and run them through your hair, focusing on defining individual sections and particularly the ends, for those nice spiky bits.

The longer Sonny’s hair gets, the better he looks. This is because his face is quite round, and as I said above, longer styles suit his face type.

Sonny’s hair is also in much better condition in this picture, as you can see it is very shiny and healthy looking. I can’t stress enough the need to take very good care of your hair. Emo cuts, colors and styles are all about expression, so you want to be making a statement with your hair.

Make it a good one.

His hair is longer yet again in this picture. In fact this is one of his more recent styles, post FFTL when he broke out of the emo stereotype a little bit.

The other thing I wanted to point out with this picture is what not to do. See how the copper color is growing out? And *gasp* fading? You don’t want that.

I’m not going to lie, it really is a bitch to maintain this kind of coloring.

My advice, if you get sick of your hair being multi colors or just can’t keep up with it anymore, would be to dye it all the one color. A dark color like brown or black that is very easy to maintain.

Which brings me to the most recent of Sonny’s styles. The plain black, long, loose waves and very few layers. His hair is still in very good condition.

For longer styles like this, you need to make sure to pay particular attention to the ends. The longer your hair grows, the less moisture will make it to the ends. So apply hot oil and conditioning treatments, focusing on the problem areas.

And make sure to visit the hairdresser every four to six weeks for a trim to get rid of any split ends. How often you will have to go depends on how fast your hair grows.

And there you have it boys and girls, Sonny Moore hair!

Emo Boy – Sonny Moore

Sonny John Moore (born January 15th 1988), is an electronic musician from Los Angeles, California, best known for his role as the frontman for the post-hardcore band From First to Last. Sonny left FFTL in 2007, after having to have surgery for ‘vocal problems’. He was also quoted later as saying that ‘he wasn’t happy’ with the band.

The pint sized emo rocker has since begun his own solo career, uploading tracks online and performing shows all across America with the intention of releasing his solo album ‘Bells’ in Spring ’09.

Moore’s solo sound is much softer than the frantic metal strains of his FFTL era, crossing over into electronica with a steady rock feel and the same heartfelt lyrics that made you fall in love with him in the first place. It’s a big change, but definitely worth a listen.
